Pigeons and Sports.
When coming into pigeon racing there are three category of pigeons; Tipplers, Rollers and Homers.
Tipplers: These birds fly high and they fly more than 8 hours. The Pigeon which flew for a long time will be considered as a winner. Tipplers performing more than 12 hours were recorded.
Rollers: These birds fly high and perform somersault in the air. Normally these birds can fly more than 6 hours and when trained they will flew extra hours. And in breeding time they will not fly long time in order to protect their nest. The ability of doing rapid backward somersaults while flying is considered to be a special character in these birds.
Homers: These birds were used as a messengers in old days. Now, these birds were used for racing purpose. Around every part of the world there is a pigeon club, in which they will conduct race every year. Fanciers give training for these birds, starting from a small distance to long. Homing pigeon loft will be well designed in order to make pigeons enter rapidly into their cage. The Pigeon which flew long distance within a short time will be a winner and the pigeon fancier will be awarded. The long-distance flight recorded by a pigeon is one that started at Arras in France and ended in Saigon, Vietnam, back in 1931.The distance was 11,600km and took 24 days. Their homing ability to return back its home from a long distance is considered to be a special character in these birds.
